Catskill, NY Weekend and Second Home Cleaning Guide
Many Catskill homes are lived in part of the time. Here is how to close up, open up and keep a weekend house fresh between visits, near the river or up in the hills.
Read moreCatskill, the Greene County seat, sits on the west bank of the Hudson where Catskill Creek meets the river, right across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge from Hudson. Main Street runs through the village with older brick storefronts, restaurants and shops, and the streets around it hold historic houses, many with porches and deep yards. At the end of the creek, Dutchman's Landing Park looks out over the Hudson, and the Thomas Cole National Historic Site, home of the painter who founded the Hudson River School, stands near the bridge. Route 9W and Route 23 carry traffic through town, and the Thruway exit puts Catskill within easy reach of the rest of the region. Catskill is inside the roughly 50-mile area we cover from Watervliet. WVF Cleaning Services Company, led by Walace Fernandes, cleans houses, offices and commercial spaces here. Text us at (518) 720-2726.

Catskill has a wide mix of homes. In the village, older houses line Main Street, Spring Street, Bridge Street and the blocks climbing away from the creek, many with original woodwork, plaster walls, porches and staircases that have seen more than a century of use. Outside the village, in Jefferson Heights, Leeds and along the roads toward the mountains, you find ranch homes, farmhouses and newer builds on larger lots. Each type needs a different approach. Older village homes need gentle treatment on wood floors and trim, with dust cleared from the top down: door frames, radiators, mantels, then baseboards and floors. Larger houses on the hills usually mean more bathrooms, bigger kitchens and finished basements. A standard cleaning keeps any of these homes in good shape on a recurring basis, and a deep cleaning handles grout, tubs, showers and buildup that has collected over time.
Being where Catskill Creek meets the Hudson, with the Catskill Mountains to the west, means the weather shapes how homes get dirty. Damp spring and summer air can leave older houses near the water feeling musty, with mildew on bathroom caulk, shower walls and basement corners. Winter brings snow and road salt from Route 9W and Route 23, and the first few feet inside the door take most of it. Rural roads and gravel driveways add dust and mud that end up on floors and in entryways year round. Many Catskill homes are also second homes or weekend places, closed up for stretches and then opened for visits, and dust builds fast in a house left alone. A standard cleaning scheduled ahead of your arrival means the house is ready when you get there. A spring deep cleaning, plus our low residential window cleaning for the windows you reach from the floor, resets things after winter.
